wood|chuck «WUD CHUHK», noun.
a thick-set North American mammal with short legs and a bushy tail; ground hog. It is a kind of marmot. Woodchucks grow fat in summer and sleep in their holes in the ground all winter.
[American English, alteration (influenced by wood1) of wejack < Algonkian (Cree) otchek, or (Ojibwa) otchig, the name of the fisher, that is, the marten, transferred to the ground hog]
